Recently Chinatown Today’s Board of Directors met for a social gathering in Chinatown. Our Social Media Director, Vicky, organized an egg tart crawl and Vice President, Pearl, created custom score cards for us to rate each pastry. In typical Vancouver fashion, the day started out cloudy and rainy, and ended in sunshine as bright as the golden custards we demolished.
The egg tart is a classic Cantonese pastry created during the Portuguese and English colonization period to cater to Western palates. Nowadays, it is a beloved snack to be enjoyed with an afternoon tea or at dim sum! The Hong Kong-style egg tart is the type most commonly seen in Chinatown, but there is also a Macau-style egg tart with a caramelized top that more closely resembles the Portuguese pastel de nata. For our crawl, the score card was made based on the Hong Kong-style egg tart where we expect a crispy layered pastry puff shell with a silky egg custard.
It was a fun group activity to support local Chinatown bakeries. Gastronomically, taste and the concept of “best” in foods is highly subjective. Our taste preferences are nurtured from a young age, beginning with the types of foods prepared for us at home. So, don’t take the score card too seriously. We encourage you to bring your friends with you on your own egg tart crawl. Feel free to print out these score cards to use, and let us know which ones you enjoyed the most that day!
