Chinatown’s oldest Chinese school still in its original location, Mon Keang School (文彊學校 | man4 koeng4 hok6 haau6) is bringing back its popular Saturday School program this fall, with four classes from 11:00am-1:00pm on October 19 & 26, and November 2 & 9 in partnership with the Youth Collaborative for Chinatown & UBC Cantonese.
When: Saturday, October 19 from 11:00am-1:00pm; , Saturday, October 26 from 11:00am-1:00pm; Saturday, November 2 from 11:00am-1:00pm; , Saturday, November 9 from 11:00am-1:00pm.

Back by popular demand, Saturday School makes a return this fall with four “survival” Cantonese classes for adult beginners including hands-on practice in the Chinatown community. Open to adult beginners of all backgrounds, these classes will be taught by Celia Sze and Mona Chu, with UBC curriculum advisors Zoe Lam and Raymond Pai.
Each Saturday session will begin with one hour of classroom instruction in the historic Mon Keang School (123A East Pender), followed by one hour of immersive practice in some of the key legacy shops, restaurants and cultural institutions in Vancouver’s Chinatown.

COVID Safety Information
For the health and safety of all our community members (especially seniors, disabled and immunocompromised folks), we recommend that students wear facemasks (preferably KN95, KF94 or N95). Mon Keang School may set their own masking policy and communicate that to prospective students.
Accessibility Information
Transit: Chinatown is accessible by bus and skytrain. The closest skytrain station is Stadium-Chinatown, which is a 10 minute walk from Mon Keang School.
Parking: There is street parking in Chinatown. The nearest lots are located at Chinatown Plaza and International Village mall.
Seating: The school has chairs and desks, but some field trips may have limited to no seating.
Bathrooms: There are bathrooms located in the school.
Venue accessibility: Classes will take place on the third floor of the Wongs’ Benevolent Association building. This is a century-old heritage building with no elevator, and there are approximately 40-50 steps on a narrow stairway. Field trips around Chinatown may involve spaces posing similar accessibility challenges, including narrow stairways/paths, limited or no seating, and uneven ground.
