About the March
The Women’s Memorial March has been held since 1992, and honours the lives of women and gender-diverse people on the Downtown Eastside. The first march, in 1992, came in response to the murder of a woman on Powell Street, and the march continues to honour and draw attention to the Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse peoples whose lives have been lost in the Downtown Eastside. Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse peoples go missing or are murdered at disproportionate rates, and due to the systemic nature of gendered violence, poverty, racism, and colonialism, little action is made to address these tragedies. The march continues to be organized and led by Indigenous women in the Downtown Eastside, providing space for the community to grieve the loss of MMIWG2S+ in the Downtown Eastside, remember those who are still missing, and strive for change.
