Join Chinatown Today for the return of Spirit of the Square! Honouring and celebrating the Hungry Ghost Festival, this community art fair will be held at the Chinatown Memorial Square on Sunday, August 18, from 3-6pm.
The Hungry Ghost festival is held on the 15th night of the seventh month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, when the hell gates are opened and restless ghosts are free to roam among us for food and entertainment. As part of the entertainment for guests both living and dead, this year’s event will feature lion dance and kung fu demonstrations from Hon Hsing Athletic Club, mahjong, and karaoke. In addition, attendees can make crafts such as lanterns to guide lost souls, and share stories through the community story-mapping.
