The City’s promised satellite office in Chinatown will be named after Won Alexander Cumyow, the first person of Chinese descent born in what is now BC. The new office will be located in the city-owned Chinatown Plaza mall and is set to open later next month.
Cumyow had previously made the shortlist of candidates to be the face of Canada’s new $5 bill. The School Board rejected a 2018 motion raised by trustee Allan Wong and a petition launched in 2016, both of which hoped to name the new elementary school in Chinatown after Cumyow. The School Board retained the name “Crosstown” (despite “Crosstown” having only been a name ascribed to Chinatown by real estate agents and developers in an attempt at erasure).
